MY CONTRIBUTION
One thing that I really do not care for is second hand smoke. According to the Mayo Clinic, there are two kinds of second hand smoke. The first is called sidestream smoke, which comes right from the tobacco. The second is called mainstream smoke, which is the smoke the smoker inhales. Also, according to the Mayo Clinic, tobacco smoke is made up of over 4,000 chemicals. More than 250 of those chemicals are toxic. Plus, over 50 of the chemicals in cigarette smoke are known or thought to cause cancer. Some of the chemicals that can be found in second hand smoke are: Formaldehyde, arsenic, ammonia, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen cyanide. Health threats that can be caused by second hand smoke include cancer, heart disease, and lung disease. Not only does second hand smoke affect adults, but it also affects children. According to the Mayo Clinic, infants and children that are associated with second hand smoke can have health problems. These can include problems with their growth and development, middle ear conditions, and respiratory problems such as asthma. Basically, smoking is a choice, but others should not have to deal with that decision. I really do not see how someone would want to smoke after knowing about all the harmful chemicals that are in cigarettes, but it is not my place to tell people they shouldn’t. Although, I choose not to smoke so it really irritates me when people are not considerate enough to go elsewhere when they want to smoke. It is fine with me if people want to take years off their lives by smoking, but I do not want to suffer any consequences from their bad decisions.

So, do you feel like we're making progress with this issue? I'm still surprised at the smoke free bans in restaurants/bars and at ICC. When I'm around smoke now it seems shocking.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this, I Dont see why people have to smoke when they have the knowledge of what the consquences are. I agree that its not ones place to tell someone what they can and cant do but what is the point of smoking.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see that a lot of people in this class are for no smoking ban at icc and most public places in illinois. I hate smoke because when I am around it, it makes me feel sick and my throat gets all scratchy. I do agree that we cant really tell people what to do but I really do think we are doing better on having a smoke free environment by all the smoking bans across the country. This is helping people quite because they have to stand outside and bare the elements just to get a smoke! This was a really great post and I'm glad you are informing the public what secondhand smoke can do.
ReplyDelete100% agree. Personally, I don't care whatsoever if someone else wants to slowly die, but I don't really want them to share it with me. Also, did you know that sidestream smoke is actually worse than mainstream smoke? Found that out when I was writing a paper on it in high school. It contains a bunch of extra toxic chemicals as it 1) never passes the filter on the cigarette, and 2) hasn't been absorbed by someone else's body. Just something I found interesting.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone that second hand smoke is worse but....who cares if people are smoking in the open wind outside?? Walk an extra foot over and you have nothing to worry about. Cell phones cause brain damage are we going to have to give those up too, just cuz not everyone uses them?? Yeah....probably not. We have no right to take the freedoms of smoking away from anyways unless it is in an enclosed area. This campus is big enough that it shouldnt be the big of a deal to people. I mean if u dont like smoking then dont do it. If you dont like second hand smoke, walk further away. It;s as simple as that. I understand peoples concerns totally but smokers shouldn't lose their freedoms because some of us don't agree with it; when there are plenty of options to avoid them. I really liked this blog though. Just wanted to throw some alternate options out there.
